Preparation

Naming & Exporting Multitracks for Mixing

Please ask the person exporting multitracks to read the following guidelines, as this will ensure the most efficient mixing process, and help me to quickly navigate the song when importing files. Here is a link to this section

  • Export tracks from Bar 1 of the song to the end of the longest track.

  • Include the song BPM in the folder name. If there is a tempo map, please provide this as a MIDI file.

  • Number each channel exactly as it appears in your session:

For example:

01 Kick In
02 Kick Out

03 Snare Top

04 Snare Btm

etc

  • For double tracks, please designate with an L or R (if you have chosen this) or DBL at the end of the track/file name.

For example:

11 Gtr Rhythm Amp L
12 Gtr Rhythm DI L
13 Gtr Rhythm Amp R
14 Gtr Rhythm DI R
...

23 Ld Vocal DBL

  • Please use prefix labels for all other instruments except drums to determine their group. Shorthand is fine if it’s clear.

For example:

20 Bass DI
21 Bass Amp
22 Bass Distortion
23 Guitar Rhythm L
24 Guitar Rhythm DI L
25 Guitar Rhythm R
26 Guitar Rhythm DI R
27 Guitar Rhythm Chorus L
28 Guitar Rhythm Chorus R
29 Gtr Ld Verse
30 Gtr Ld CH L
31 Gtr Ld CH R
32 LV Verse
33 LV Ch
34 DBL L
35 DBL R
36 BV L
37 BV R
38 BV Verse 1
39 BV Verse 2
40 Keys Juno Bass
41 Piano Chords
42 Strings

etc.

  • Include DI tracks for bass and guitars alongside the amp sound where possible.

  • Print down any specific FX crucial to the production.

  • Include the best/last rough mix representing the song’s vision.

  • Avoid using unusual characters in filenames (? / * & etc.).

  • Do not split the multitrack into folders by instrument; place all channels in one master folder.

  • Include extra tracks (reference FX, etc.) in a separate folder inside the master folder.

IMPORTANT:

Please upload all multitrack files to a blank session and verify everything is as it should be before uploading. â€‹

Checklist

Pre-Mixing Checklist

Please complete all editing before submitting your multitracks to achieve the best results and avoid disappointment with the final mix. Editing is available as an extra service but is not included in the mixing cost.

To verify multitracks are mix ready:

  • Have no unwanted noise or hums (ie. strip silence, mouth clicks or amp noise between guitar performance removed)

  • All crossfades/comps are clean to avoid clicks/pops - solo tracks to detect any issues

  • Any quantisation or rhythmic editing required is complete

  • Vocals are tuned and time aligned as intended

  • Arrangement is how you want it (remove any audio that you want muted in a given section)

  • All performances are final and of intended quality

Confirm Format:

  • Confirm that all mixes are in WAV or AIFF format, and not a compression version e.g., MP3 or AAC.

Uploading

Uploading Files

Once you've completed the above checks, you're ready to upload your multitracks for mixing!

  • You can organise the files as you prefer, but please use a separate folder for every song. I recommend using separate sub-folders for any alternate multitracks (such as dry or processed), and/or reference tracks.

  • Ensure all files and sub-folders are placed in one master folder. After organising, please compress this folder into a ZIP file (please use ZIP, not RAR).

    • This process helps prevent errors during upload and protects the files' metadata when transferring via cloud services.

  • You can either request a file upload link or provide a direct link to your files using your preferred file transfer service. You'll be presented with these options in the pre-mixing form.

    • If you send your own link, please ensure it is a direct download link that does not require an account or access request. You can test this by using your browser in private/incognito mode.

      • I recommend using WeTransfer or Dropbox, both of which offer free versions with 2GB of storage.

      • For larger transfers, if you don't have access to a suitable service, you'll need to request a file upload link.
